What You Need To Know About Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth, looking and functioning like your own natural teeth and surrounding gum tissues. They are generally made from an ultramodern acrylic material which is high-strength and durable.

If you’ve lost your natural teeth for whatever reason, dentures can be used as a replacement to restore your smile and help you eat and speak more comfortably.

Modern dentures look and feel natural in the mouth and will provide essential support to your facial muscles and dental tissue. Dentures are a false teeth option available to suit, no matter your budget or how many natural teeth you have remaining and can last a very long time.

At Bulleen Plaza Dental, we believe that proper denture care and cleaning techniques is essential for preventing build-up of plaque and tartar and maintaining a healthy smile. Our experts will provide daily care instructions that will maintain the quality and effectiveness for your dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Denture Repairs

Although dentures are designed to be strong and durable, they will occasionally need a repair or quick fix over the course of their life. Repairs can be carried out on a small part of the fitting or the entire framework, depending on the scope of the damage.

Denture Damage

The most common repair needed for a denture is a single tooth repair or replacement. For fixed dentures the problem is usually caused by damage during eating or trauma due to an accident, but removable dentures can be harmed at any time they’re not being worn, so it’s important to take care of them at all times. Damage to dentures doesn’t have to be a big concern, as our expert team is on hand to fix them quickly and safely.

Emergency Denture Repair

Sometimes accidents occur, and if your denture is fractured or broken it may need immediate care. When this occurs, you can bring your denture straight to our team and we’ll get started on a repair as soon as possible, to help minimise the time you have to spend without it, and to ensure that no further issues are caused.

Can a Denture Be Repaired?

The short answer is yes! In most cases of damage due to general wear and tear, and often in cases of accidental breaks or chips, we can restore your denture to its former strength and appearance. It’s vital that you seek professional help to repair dentures as attempting to do this yourself is likely to make the problem worse in the long run. If your denture is damaged, make sure to collect any pieces that have broken off and bring them with you to make the repair as easy as possible.

Full and Partial Denture Repair

We offer a complete denture repairs service for any type of broken denture whether full or partial – fixed or removable. Whatever the problem, from a chip on a single tooth to multiple fractures, Bulleen Plaza Dental have the expert skills and advanced tools for the job.

Care & Cleaning Advice

At Bulleen Plaza Dental, we believe that proper denture care and cleaning techniques is essential for preventing build-up of plaque and tartar and maintaining a healthy smile. Our experts will provide daily care instructions that will maintain the quality and effectiveness for your dentures.

DAILY CARE

We recommend that you clean your dentures twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You may also choose to purchase a denture cleaning paste, but hand washing liquid should be effective enough. Avoid using toothpaste, as this can cause them to lose their coating and become stained.

You should also soak your dentures in a denture cleaner at least twice a week. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to ensure you are cleaning them without causing damage.

After eating, remove and rinse your dentures by running water over them. This will remove food and loose particles. Consider placing a towel in the sink or counter where you wash your dentures so that if the dentures fall, they won’t break. Alternatively, fill the sink with water.

After removing your dentures, clean your mouth with a gentle toothbrush. You should also massage and clean your gums whilst doing so, as this promotes circulation. A salt-rinse will also help clean your mouth.

Overnight Denture Care

The best way to clean dentures is to clean them with a cleaning aid once a week.  If you wish to use a cleaning aid, we recommend you purchase a product that is recommended for overnight soaking.

AVOID

Part of taking care of dentures is avoiding certain factors that may cause damage. These include:

  • Whitening Toothpastes – Peroxide, a common material in whitening toothpastes, can cause damage.
    • Abrasive Materials – Harsh toothpastes and rough-bristled toothbrushes, can also damage dentures.
    • Bleach in Materials – Bleach can tarnish and corrode the metal in dentures, as well as change the colour of the acrylic.

If your dentures are too loose, do not tighten them yourself. Self-tightening kits can be very damaging. Instead, contact us to request a tightening service.
